As a traditional motorcycle manufacturer, KYMCO's transition to smart connected motorcycles will drive a new revolution in the smart motorcycle landscape.
Before the summer solstice, KYMCO motorcycles created a wave of smart connected motorcycle test drives at the Jinport racetrack.
Acceleration, deceleration, cornering, and exiting corners—after a test drive, riders gave high praise to KYMCO's newly released AK550 motorcycle.
“This is a long-awaited motorcycle product, and it met my expectations in terms of power and suspension,” shouted a rider who had just gotten off the bike.
The AK550, KYMCO's flagship motorcycle built around the concept of "The Thrills of Touring," made its global debut at the 2016 Cologne International Motorcycle Show. The AK550 uniquely combines the high-performance handling of a street bike with the comfort of a touring bike, offering both performance and practicality. Its unified retail price in mainland China is 116,000.
KYMCO Chairman, Ke Shengfeng, stated, “The AK550's predecessor is the K50 Concept, launched by KYMCO to commemorate over 50 years of vehicle manufacturing. The name AK is an abbreviation of "Anniversario KYMCO" in Italian, signifying this impressive touring bike's commemorative significance and representing the ultimate achievement of KYMCO's 50 years of entrepreneurial efforts.”
KYMCO General Manager, Li Zhicheng, emphasized, “KYMCO's future product positioning will focus on safety, intelligence, energy efficiency, and leisure. High-end vehicles will incorporate internet connectivity trends, feature ABS safety systems, and showcase strong R&D capabilities, providing consumers with products that truly meet their needs.”
During the test drive, the focus was on experiencing KYMCO's Noodoe smart connected system.
The Noodoe smart connected system technology was developed by KYMCO's innovative team, the "Prophecy Institute," by observing the daily usage habits of riders and global technology trends, and providing necessary services through the "Noodoe Internet of Things".
The initial purpose of this technology was to minimize the safety risks associated with drivers using their mobile phones while driving, while also incorporating customizable display functions to make driving more enjoyable during both leisurely rides and daily commutes.
At the test drive site, the test vehicles were paired with Apple phones equipped with a test app. Each phone connected to the motorcycle's smart connected system via Bluetooth.
Users can customize the content projected onto the motorcycle's dashboard via the mobile app. Currently, six basic functions are available: time, speed, weather, smart compass, notifications, and vehicle location.
The customization options for speed, weather, and time are highly playable. The dashboard background and display style can be controlled via the mobile app. Background images can be selected from system-provided options or taken with the phone's camera. The speed display style and font size are also adjustable.
On-site technicians explained, “The vehicle location function is a key feature of the Noodoe system. If users forget where they parked, they can use the phone's built-in map to navigate to the parking spot, or use the team's self-developed compass to locate the vehicle.”
When asked if this function could help owners find their vehicle if it was stolen, technicians stated that this is a frequently raised issue, and the team is currently negotiating with telecommunication companies; the function's launch may still take some time.
As an initial Noodoe system, the team stated that they do not intend to approach the CarPlay mobile mapping function found in cars. Motorcycles and cars are different; the probability of accidents due to mobile phone use is higher while riding a motorcycle. Therefore, the team aims to make the motorcycle dashboard an important information display, with important text messages and calls from the phone being projected onto the vehicle's dashboard first.
When a test call was made to the test phone, the phone call prompt on the motorcycle dashboard was very quick. However, the motorcycle's control area does not have an answer button; it only provides a simple display prompt.
Answering calls while riding is dangerous; the lack of an answer function is a realistic safety measure. To target a younger demographic, the system also includes a social function. Riders traveling together can see each other's real-time locations. To enhance social features, all users who download the Noodoe app can upload their own custom dashboard designs for others to use. This is a highly innovative in-vehicle internet system.
KYMCO General Manager, Li Zhicheng, said, “From initial R&D to market launch, this system has cost over 50 million yuan. In today's intelligent development era, we must embrace technology. In the future, we will add more interesting features and accelerate our layout in the electric motorcycle field.”
At the recent CES exhibition, Honda showcased its Honda Riding Assist, representing Honda's commitment to providing fun and engaging mobility. The highlight of this technology is the balance control technology mastered through research on humanoid robots like ASIMO.
This technology minimizes the risk of tipping over. Whether or not a rider is on the motorcycle, it can stand on its own. Even if the rider loses balance slightly, the motorcycle can maintain its balance, reducing wobbling at low speeds and during parking, and lowering the risk of tipping over during sharp turns.
Intelligence and connectivity are gradually entering the transportation sector. From cars to motorcycles, it is foreseeable that motorcycles will incorporate more new, interesting, and safe features in the near future.
